Thinking to buy new floor coverings for your home or business, then read this first !!
Added Sunday, November 14th, 2010A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit a high class day care centre in posh Mission Bay.
The issue was that they installed new black vinyl floor and it was full of scratches. Both parties, the owner of the day care centre & the flooring company were blaming each other and attempting to prove each other wrong.
I patiently listened as a spectator, (the owner of the day care invited me for my independent opinion).
The argument was not going anywhere, other than each side taking out their frustration.
In the end I could not wait any longer, I had to intrude and literally tell them to shut up.
The real problem was the customer installed black lino in the kids play area on the professional advice of an interior decorator (matching the colour of the walls & the floors).
When young kids played in the sand pit, the sand scratched the floor removing the coating from the vinyl.
Ultimately both parties were happy and the best solution was found.
To get the message across:
When selecting floors, don’t just consider a colour based on appearance.
Also consider floors that are easy to clean with maintenance that is low cost. Avoid textured floorings because the dirt will be trapped in the grooves and the floors will stay dirty.
It is also pays to have a small drain, so the floor can be thoroughly washed occasionally.
Also consider the practicality of the floor…..I suggest visiting similar businesses to experience the nature of use. Remember all floors require a certain degree of maintenance. The idea is to keep it simple so your staff can maintain it, this will save you money.
The usage of the floors – Childcare centres are high traffic areas therefore floors will be washed more often due to kids running in & out with mud and sand on their feet. Furniture will also be dragged on the floor.
Always consider all these facts before installing good, durable floor coverings. The funny thing is people invest thousands on these things but when it comes to maintaining their floors, they always look for cheaper floor care personnel.
Remember you are paying people to the job. Always get someone with knowledge & skill to do it properly, after all you want your floor to last at least 15 years or more.
Floor suppliers are great people but their knowledge is limited to new vinyl, they should spend some time on the after sale outcome.
