10-Step Carpet Maintenance Tips:

SCHEDULE PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Soil particles can have over 25 different cutting edges that wear and tear at carpet fibres if not removed. The best way to keep your carpet looking good is to clean it — early and often

USE WALK – OFF MATS

The good news is that simple procedures can reduce soiling dramatically. Nearly 70% of the soil in carpeting is tracked from the outside. Walk off mats catch this dirt before it gets to your carpet. Mats should be cleaned frequently and should be long enough for about 6 steps – 4 to 5 metres.

VACUUM REGULARLY

Almost 80% of the soil that gets into carpeting can be vacuumed out. A dual motor vacuum with a brush will loosen the dirt then suck it up through the vacuum head.

VACUUM HEAVY TRAFFIC AREAS FREQUENTLY

Reduce costs by vacuuming seldom used areas on an as-needed basis. Don’t push and pull the vacuum — it wastes time and increases fatigue. Vacuum in a regular pattern like mowing a lawn.

REMOVE SPILLS QUICKLY

First scoop up as much as possible. Then use a blotting action to absorb liquid and work from the outside in to avoid spreading.

IDENTIFY THE STAIN AND THE RIGHT TREATMENT FOR IT

While many carpets are treated to be stain resistant, no carpet is completely stain proof, so anything spilled on a carpet should be cleaned up promptly. When spills occur, the first step is to absorb as much of the liquid as possible, using paper towels or clean cloths. Use a blotting action to prevent fuzzing the carpet surface and work from the outside to prevent spreading the spill.

CHANGING HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING FILTERS REGULARLY

The carpet — and the entire building — will stay clean longer.

PLAN REGULAR INTERIM MAINTENANCE

Greasy and oily soils attract dirt, dull colours and can permanently damage carpet. They can be removed by bonnet cleaning, shampooing and other interim maintenance procedures.

USE SOIL EXTRACTION EQUIPMENT

New technologies have made soil extraction the preferred method of interim carpet maintenance and deep cleaning. An operator with a modern extracting machine can clean approvimately 400 to 600 square meters per hour making extraction a cost effective method of choice

HAVE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB

Reliable, appropriate equipment saves time and money, improves the appearance of your carpet and extends its life.
